FIDE formally listed Rosenstein and businessman Gordon Tang as one of three approved presidential tickets for the September 26, 2026 election in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The other tickets are Jan Henric Buettner with Malcolm Pein and Timur Turlov with former world champion Viswanathan Anand.
Rosenstein's candidacy is built largely around his experience in international business and privately organised chess projects. At the same time, the election campaign has generated questions concerning his business history, earlier commercial activity connected with Russia, possible conflicts between private chess interests and federation responsibilities, and his participation in the campaign process.
These issues need to be considered separately. Some aspects of Rosenstein's biography are documented through FIDE records and corporate information, while other matters consist of allegations or requests for investigation that have not established wrongdoing.
From Ukraine to Germany
Rosenstein has publicly described his international background in considerable detail. According to his account, he was born in 1990 in Ukraine's Zhytomyr region and moved to Germany with his family in 2000. He has said that he holds German citizenship and that his family background connects him culturally with Ukraine and Russia, while Germany became the country in which he grew up and developed professionally.
Chess was also part of his childhood. Rosenstein has said that his grandfather introduced him to the game and that coaches and volunteers subsequently helped him participate in chess despite limited financial resources during his early years.
His campaign biography presents this experience as one reason for his interest in expanding opportunities for chess players and national federations.
Building an International Business Career
Rosenstein later pursued a career in business. His professional profile is now closely associated with WR Group Holding, whose activities have included logistics, engineering, infrastructure, certification, real estate and other international projects.
His 2026 campaign website describes him as chairman of WR Group Holding and says the group has conducted business across more than 70 countries. The campaign argues that managing companies across different markets has provided Rosenstein with experience in building organisations, managing teams and coordinating stakeholders from different backgrounds.
That experience forms an important part of his argument for seeking the FIDE presidency. Rosenstein has said that FIDE needs stronger professional governance, clearer accountability, faster decision-making and greater commercial development.
In an interview with Reuters, he also emphasized the need to increase sponsorship and improve the federation's commercial performance while maintaining the importance of classical chess.

WR Chess and Rosenstein's Growing Profile
Long before announcing his candidacy, Rosenstein had become increasingly visible through WR Chess, a privately backed chess organisation associated with tournaments and teams involving prominent international players.
The 2023 WR Chess Masters in Düsseldorf helped establish the organisation among international chess audiences. WR Chess later participated in FIDE's World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships, where Rosenstein himself was registered as a player for WR Chess teams. FIDE tournament records list him under German federation affiliation with FIDE ID 24148148.
Wadim Rosenstein has described such projects as examples of how private investment can expand chess audiences, create new formats and provide additional opportunities for professional and developing players.
His increasing involvement eventually moved beyond private event organisation.
Becoming Germany's Representative to FIDE
In 2026 Rosenstein became Germany's FIDE delegate, giving him a formal role within international chess administration. His growing institutional involvement was followed by the announcement on June 26 that he would seek the FIDE presidency.
In announcing his campaign, Rosenstein argued that FIDE should become a more professionally managed international sports institution. He also said national federations should have a stronger voice and receive better support from the organisation.
When nominations closed in July, FIDE confirmed that Rosenstein would run for president alongside Gordon Tang as his candidate for deputy president. The FIDE Electoral Commission subsequently approved the presidential tickets as valid under the federation's election procedures.
Questions Concerning Earlier Business Activity in Russia
One of the more sensitive issues raised during the campaign concerns WR Group's past commercial activities connected with Russia.
Reuters reported in September 2026 that companies associated with WR Group had previously participated in logistics, certification and other projects in Russia, including work connected with the energy sector. Rosenstein told Reuters that Russian projects had been discontinued following sanctions imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
